Dildos have been used by humans for a very long time. Exactly how long dildos have been about is uncertain, but there is evidence of their use throughout the past 2000 years at least. It has been suggested that stone phallic batons found in the Gorge d'Enfer may have been used as Paleolithic Dildos, although these artifacts are more often interpreted as spear straighteners. A beautiful jade phallus, which may very well have been used as a Dildos, and is reckoned by curators to be about 4000 years old, is currently on display in the Ancient Chinese Sex Culture Museum near Shanghai. Dildos are also mentioned, figuratively, in the Bible.
Stone Dildos have been recovered during archaeological digs. Dildos in one form or another have likely to have been present in society throughout history.
The word "Dildos" is possibly a corruption of Italian "diletto" (for "delight").
The word dildo may derive from the words "Dil Doul", literally meaning an erect penis. The phrase is used in an old song named "The Maids Complaint for want of a Dil Doul". The song was among many in the Library of Samuel Pepys.
There is some general disagreement about what precisely defines Dildos. There is general agreement that a nonvibrating device, resembling a penis in shape, size, and overall dildos appearance, is a dildo. Some people include vibrating devices in this definition. Others exclude penis prosthetic aids, also called "extensions." Some dildos include penis-shaped items clearly designed with vaginal penetration in mind even if they are not true approximations of a penis. Some people include devices designed for anal penetration (butt plugs) while others do not. Dildos are availible to buy from most adult shops and sex toys shops.
